The Orchestra has also commssioned brand new music, in honour of our brand new bank holiday for St Brigid's Day. Rose Connolly is a composer, performer and multi-instrumentalist from Co Fermanagh.

Describing her new work, Rose says: "The festival of Brigid celebrates the rebirth of nature, of life and of everything. Being the goddess of fertility amongst many other things, I wanted to create a piece that travels from birth to death and rebirth, the invisible reawakening of nature within the cold earth.

"The piece begins from nothing but incrementally grows and blossoms throughout, representing birth and growth. After a climax, death creeps in and eventually fades away, awaiting re-growth. I inform the players and conductor, and myself too, to become the liquid rapidity of the sea waves, blossoming like a tiny fish cradled in the vast ocean from which all life originates, emerging from the primordial womb of emergence".

The RTÉ Concert Orchestra Presents The Feast of Brigid, RTÉ Radio 1, Monday February 6th at 2pm.
