'Our main plan is to creep you out...' Writer Peter Dunne introduces the new season of the Irish horror anthology podcast Petrified, which launches its third season this month.

"Why do you like being scared?" Being a horror fanatic, it's a question I would have been asked repeatedly in the past, and I never seemed to have a satisfying answer - "Em, it’s like, you know, being at the top of a rollercoaster before it drops…" Totally made up of course, I just really love horror.

Thankfully, that question doesn’t get asked much anymore, because now everyone seems to love horror. Halloween gets bigger and bigger, at the cinema, the only things that make money are superheroes and horror films, and we’re delighted to be riding that wave, as we’re about to release the third series of our horror anthology podcast, Petrified.

It would be mind-blowing to the little crew hunched over the dining room table in my house whispering creepily into microphones four years ago that we’d go on to become an award-winning podcast listened to around the world… and still recording episodes around my dining room table years later.

For the uninitiated, Petrified is an anthology podcast produced by Liam Geraghty and written and directed by yours truly. These are terror tales with a distinctive Irish bent – we've had episodes about ghost estates, parish nuns being terrorised on a pilgrimage and the twelve pubs of Christmas amongst others. There’s a bit of humour in there, but our main plan is to creep you out. Each episode is a mini radio play with some of the best actors Ireland has to offer.

We’ve been incredibly lucky with the voice actors for Petrified. As the saying goes – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, so our cast have become somewhat of a family. You’ll find the same performers popping up again and again in each series – sometimes even in the same episode – but they are all so amazing you never think it’s the same character twice.

For the new series, our cast has become a little more international.

While we were in the early days of planning, Liam asked me, "If you had a wish list for performers, who would you like to appear in Petrified?" I thought it was just a fun, academic question, so we didn’t hold back. I’m a huge fan of the US horror filmmaker and actor Larry Fessenden and Liam adores Cecil Baldwin, the host of the podcast Welcome to Nightvale, so my jaw dropped when a week later, Liam told me they were both in. He’d popped off and got in touch with them based on our wish list - which I thought was just a chat between friends - a perfect example of ‘you don’t ask you don’t get’. This was further evidenced when the glorious Anne Doyle herself agreed to make a cameo in an episode about moving statues across Ireland. You can’t get more iconic than that.
