Artist Robert Ballagh talks to The Works Presents

What inspires and drives the creative mind? John Kelly returns to RTÉ One with new episodes of The Works Presents, which explore this very question - watch now, via RTÉ Player.

In the latest edition, John talks to artist Robert Ballagh - watch a preview above.

Robert Ballagh is an Irish painter and designer, his work extremely well-known thanks to commissions to design everything from banknotes to commemorative stamps, to the set of Riverdance.

His paintings, too, have also entered the public consciousness – particularly his portraits of Irish literary, historical and political figures. Robert is a self-taught artist who left behind a career in the showbands, to pursue his interest in art, and in 1969 he represented Ireland at the Paris Biennale.

He's also well-known for his passionate commitment to various social, political and art-related causes – and it's an activism he traces back to his early days in Dublin, and the attitude of his Presbyterian father to life and to citizenship.
