Halloween, The Shining, Scream, The Exorcist… all classics. But what are the new classics from the past decade that can proudly sit by those mentioned above and can be added to your watchlist this weekend?
We've scared up a few chilling recommendations for you...
KILL LIST
Before Ben Wheatley was making airy adaptations for Netflix (Rebecca) he was giving us low budget, bone-crunching, viciously dark films. Kill List, a tale of two hitmen going down a viscerally violent hole, has haunted many a viewer for months afterward...
Available to rent on Google Play, Rakuten TV and Sky Store.
CRIMSON PEAK
The Shape of Water was great, but this is the film that Guillermo Del Toro should have gotten the Oscar for. An old school gothic tale echoing Rebecca and The Haunting of Hill House, don't be fooled by the OTT style, it’s genuinely scary.

THE GUEST
It could be considered a thriller, but its Halloween setting pushes The Guest (from You're Next director Adam Wingard) into the horror genre too. Dan Stevens is a soldier with a lot of secrets who takes advantage of middle American hospitality...

GET OUT
Part of the small and elite club of horror films that were nominated for Best Picture Oscars, Get Out didn’t win but Jordan Peele did take home the statuette for his screenplay. This intense, satirical, social horror is the story of a young black man being brought to meet his white girlfriend’s parents for the first time...
Available to rent on Apple TV, Rakuten TV, Google Play and Sky Store.
HEREDITARY
After her death, a family realise that was a lot more to their grandmother than meets the eye... This shocking (and properly terrifying) story of grief, tragedy and demons will have you watching every dark corner in your bedroom for weeks. When you know its secrets, a second viewing makes it even more terrifying.
Now streaming on Netflix.
SAINT MAUD
The terrifying and emotional story of a young religious zealot caring for a wayward older woman, who becomes convinced she has been tasked by God to save her soul, Rose Glass's debut is a bit of a (literal) slow burn, but the payoff is killer.
Now streaming on Amazon Prime and available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play Store and Rakuten TV.
FREAKY
There's been no shortage of horror films post-Scream (1996) that have had fun at the expense of every single "psycho killer" film trope. The Final Girls, Tucker & Dale Vs Evil and Detention are all worth your time but a more recent stand out is this recent gem. Freaky merges the post-modern slasher with body swap comedy when Vince Vaughn's Blissfield Butcher switches places with one of his potential victims, an awkward teenage girl. A perfect example of two old formulas creating something fresh, fun and very funny.
Now available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play Store and Rakuten TV.
