Poetry Programme returns: Frank McGuinness & Leland Bardwell remembered

The Poetry Programme returns for a new autumn series on Sunday 16th October at 7 pm on RTÉ Radio 1 - listen to the first episode above.

Joining presenter Olivia O'Leary is Frank McGuinness, reading from his new collection May Twenty-second, published by The Gallery Press. He reads poems on themes that range from memories of his parents, to the characters in Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice, to killings in Northern Ireland.

Leland Bardwell

2022 marks the centenary of the birth of Leland Bardwell, who was born on 25th February 1922. Her son John McLachlan tells Olivia about her Collected Poetry, published by Salmon Poetry, which he has edited and which will be launched at A Single Rose, a three-day festival taking place in November 2022 at The Model in Sligo. We also hear archive recordings of Leland reading two of her remarkable poems.

Later episodes in the new season will feature work from Irish and international poets, highlight the activities of the Poetry as Commemoration project, mark Science Week in November, and in December we can look forward to the return of the Christmas Poetry Programme.

The Poetry Programme, RTÉ Radio 1, Sundays from 16th October at 7pm - listen to more from The Poetry Programme here.
