I first became aware of "The Poet" (as he was affectionately known from his early years) around the age of twelve. I was in the same class in the Courtenay National School as his younger brother and one day the teacher threw in the remark: Aren't you The Poet’s brother!

Having a leaning in that direction myself I now watched out for The Poet. And there he was one evening, sitting at Hough’s window, at the critical junction between Upper and Lower Maiden Street and gazing down towards the Iron Bridge over the river Arra.

The sweep of black hair across his forehead, the intense look. This then, was The Poet....
