You always know where you are with dogs. They bark, they wag their tails, they run around after balls. They need you, they yearn and yap for you when you're not around. They run ahead and look back to make sure you're following and haven't disappeared and left them alone in the world.

If you're afraid of being alone, as I am, man's best friend is the kind of companion that will keep you feeling needed.

Cats on the other hand make me nervous. They are enviously self-sufficient, their purr a sense of mystery. The truth is, I am a bit co-dependent so their independence scares me.

I once had a cat. Well, sort of...
