One hundred years on from his assassination, Michael Collins has been firmly cast in the popular mind as Ireland's tragic, heroic heartthrob. Collins, according to Frank O Connor, had 'one of those queer lightening minds which never halt before a word or decision while De Valera fidgeted and brooded over every sentence like a hen on an egg.’

Hardly surprising, then, that Collins, not Eamon de Valera, was the one to receive the complete Hollywood blockbuster treatment...
