40 years ago, this month saw the release of Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial – a film about a stranded alien, a boy called Elliott who discovers it and a bond of friendship that remains as heart breaking now as it did back in 1982. John Maguire revisits a movie masterpiece for RTÉ Arena above.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial remains a watershed in moviemaking, a highpoint in Spielberg's unparalleled career and one of the most beloved motion pictures of all time. Later this year, the movie will return to cinemas worldwide in the IMAX format alongside another Spielberg classic, Jaws.
