I spotted a tatty leather couch, just inside the ditch, on the top field of the farm. It faced Knockenafrin Ridge on the Comeragh mountains. I was putting out fodder for sheep, and a few of the ewes were scratching themselves on the burst leatherette.

While it looked a like a surreal art installation, I knew this sofa was unloved; fly tipped by some litter lout. I thought about our late mother, who could never discard a stick of furniture. I thought in particular, of her obsession with collecting couches...
