"I first visited Kyiv in September 1985. I was one of the small Irish Embassy team in Moscow when a visiting Minister from Dublin arrived on an official visit. Since 1982 there had been three state funerals for Soviet leaders in quick succession - Brezhnev in 1982, Andropov in 1984 and Chernenko in 1985..."
