My beloved grandmother Mary loved to walk. Undoubtedly, everyone growing up in rural Ireland in the early part of the 20th century walked much more than their modern day counterparts, but for my Granny it was more than that. Orginally advised by her general practitioner as the best way to keep varicose veins caused by pregancy under control (like most of her generation, she took the instructions of a doctor very seriously), walking also became her comfort and solace, one of the few things she had for herself...
