Sunday Miscellany: Granddaddy, by Kathleen Murphy

Marking the fifth anniversary of the recognition of Travellers as an ethnic minority group in Ireland, Kathleen Murphy writes about how she forged a closer relationship with her grandfather.

"I wanted to be closer to Granddaddy, like I was, and am, to my other grandfather but I didn't know how. Granddaddy was a strict, serious, funny man who only used the number of words required and not one more than necessary, I guess that is where Daddy gets it from. Growing up I respected granddaddy, but I didn't know how to talk to him. Despite the fact that we both spoke English we might as well have being speaking two different languages..."
