I first heard the name Anne Frank when I was five or six years old, in my parents' house in the dunes of Bergen aan Zee, a small , isolated village on Holland’s windswept North Sea coast. We were sitting in the living room on a quiet afternoon and for some reason I remember that my mother was talking about varnishing the floorboards in a deep purple colour, when the doorbell rang.
