Ahead of her seventh studio album Hands, to be released on Friday 27th May, her new single What's Wrong With Changing? concerns major milestones affecting Wallis’s life and sees her deftly weave personal tales of change with stories of societal transformation: from living in different countries and getting to know other cultures to Ireland becoming the first country in the world to vote in favour of legalising same-sex marriage.

FILM

Victoria from 2015 is a one-shot indie opus set in Berlin. It's about a woman who meets four interesting characters in a club, and what starts as a regular post-club hang out slowly disintegrates into life threatening crime. Music by Nils Frahm, masterfully shot, nail-biting character and story development. It left me at times high and at times nauseous. Whopper.

Okay, let's imagine we're going for a walk in the park and it's covered in snow.

We're coming out of the park now and it's a cityscape, the world, the traffic is slowed down and Gerry O'Beirne's Swimming The Horses is playing.

I'm really looking forward to the Women Of Note concert I’m performing with Aoife Scott and Peggy Seeger at the end of the month at Tradfest Temple Bar in Dublin.

ART

My friend Christopher Colm Morrin has been making excellent paintings for the last two years documenting his hard won soul reconfiguration. Really powerful and personal.

RADIO/PODCAST

I listen to Desert Island Discs. Lauren Laverne is an expert and warm interviewer, she draws fascinating candid truths from the world's most successful minds. And because the songs they choose are connected to milestones of the subjects life, they really confess so much about the person; their vulnerability, their past, their desires, their ego and often where they straight up robbed their influences! Fiachna Ó Braonáin’s Late Date show on RTÉ Radio 1 is also a favourite of mine, he’s a true lover of new music, bringing out the best in Ireland.

TECH

I began using Ableton software for my music productions about a year ago, and it has revolutionised the craft for me. I’m much more fluid and playful now because of it. It has important things like good customer service and well-made tutorials, it’s a very strong software and handles large projects with ease, and it sounds excellent. Aside from that I find GarageBand on the iPhone a super capable app for even a beginner to get lost in composing.

The Next Big Thing:

A big wish in my lifetime would be to see a radical change in mindset, the end of capitalist reign and a distribution of Universal Health and Wealthcare as a norm to us and the planet we inhabit. Treat Mother Earth real nice for a f**kin change!

But a small wish in my lifetime is to see unethical ‘free’ music streaming pass away. There’s talk of a new model whereby artists sell and chart their music through Cryptocurrencies as shareholder stock - except the main difference is that the artist gets paid first in the chain. Something like this could refuel a worldwide economic boom because that affords better creativity for everyone = better art, better humans.

Failing that, I hear cords are back in fashion.

Wallis Bird's album Hands is out on Friday 27th May 2022. What's Wrong With Changing is out now.
