On chocolate, fudge and survival in the Warsaw Ghetto - for Sunday Miscellany on RTÉ Radio 1, listen to Little Cows by Oliver Sears above.

Of all the possible pubescent allergies to develop, why did it have to be chocolate? Quite suddenly, at the age of fourteen I developed migraines; molten lava that erupted behind the forehead to pool behind my eyes for days. Migraine has three well known dietary triggers: cheese, red wine and chocolate. I didn't like cheese, had not yet succumbed to alcohol and that left only chocolate. A regimen of chocolate cake, mousse, yoghurt, milkshakes, ice cream, bars and cornflakes concertinaed into a crashing halt. Who could have known? No chocolate, no migraine. It was simple.
