In 2020, during the first Covid lockdown, RTÉ Radio 1's The Rolling Wave with support from the Irish Traditional Music Archive, commissioned ten musicians to write a piece of music for the programme.

The project was called Faoiseamh and it was a great success resulting in ten wonderful pieces of music which were performed on the programme alongside interviews with each musician.

This year we're delighted to present the second series of commissions, Faoiseamh 2021.

Once again, ten musicians have written new music for the programme. They are Fintan Vallely, Caitlín Nic Gabhann, Carl Hession, Bríd Harper, David Munnelly, Joanie Madden, Damien McGeehan, Máire Breathnach, Connie O’Connell and Úna Ní Fhlannagáin.

The music and the interviews will be broadcast over two weeks on December 5th and 12th, and then all ten compositions will be published as a playlist on RTÉ Culture.

In addition, the Irish Traditional Music Archive will publish a comprehensive blog to accompany the series featuring information about each composer as well as transcriptions and audio files of all of the new tunes - find out more here.
