The Gate Theatre has announced that Selina Cartmell will step down as Artistic Director and CEO in March of 2022, following the completion of her five-year term.
During her time at the Gate, Cartmell produced a number of world premieres, and popular productions of The Great Gatsby, Hamlet, The Snapper and A Christmas Carol.
The theatre recently reopened its doors after an extended hiatus due to the Covid 19 crisis, with a production Phillip McMahon's new play Once Before I Go, directed by Cartmell.

She will remain at The Gate until March 2022 to oversee two recently announced productions: Christmas presentation Mabel’s Magnificent Flying Machine and a revival of Samuel Beckett's Endgame, set to star Robert Sheehan and comedian Frankie Boyle. She will also facilitate the search process for her successor.
Founded in 1928 by Hilton Edwards and Micheál MacLiammóir, the Gate has had three Artistic Directorships in its 90 year-plus history: Edwards and MacLiammóir, followed by Michael Colgan in 1983, and most recently Cartmell in 2017.

"It has been five rollercoaster years of which I'm hugely proud," said Cartmell in a statement. "We have managed unprecedented challenges which have put a significant burden on our team and resources. It is a tribute to the Gate Company and all the artists and audiences who have supported the Gate over the last 92 years that the theatre continues to speak to the hearts and minds of everyone who experiences one of the Gate’s productions."
