'Recovering Imagined Futures' is the title of tonight's third episode in the Machnamh 100 Series, the public seminar strand hosted by President Michael D. Higgins. Tonight’s episode will discuss issues of social class, land and the role of women, as they relate to events in Ireland a century ago.

President Higgins will present an address, ‘Land, Social Class, Gender and the Sources of Violence’. Access to land is one of the underlying themes that impacts on many of the most significant events in Irish history in the 19th and 20th century. Among them the campaigns for Emancipation, Repeal, Home Rule, and the Anti-Tithe movement. Reflecting on how attitudes and approaches to land impacted on rural communities, the President will detail the effect on women in rural Ireland.

The event is chaired by broadcaster, author and historian, Dr. John Bowman, and features a principal address by Dr. Margaret O’Callaghan of Queens University Belfast. Also contributing are Dr. Caitríona Clear [NUI Galway], Professor Linda Connolly [NUI Maynooth], Ms. Catríona Crowe, [Royal Irish Academy], and Dr. John Cunningham [NUI Galway].

Event is chaired by Dr. John Bowman
