FILM

The last film I saw was Run with Sarah Paulson on Netflix. This is a good movie, and the whole family sat to watch it (we don’t always agree on what to watch). It’s a film directed by Aneesh Chaganty and written by Chaganty and Sev Ohanian. It stars Kiera Allen as a homeschooled teenager who begins to suspect her mother (Sarah Paulson) is keeping a dark secret from her. No matter what film or TV show Sarah Paulson decides to star in, you're always guaranteed that she'll be the best thing in it. Be it big budget outings like Ocean's 8 and American Horror Story or revelling in the darker side of humanity in 12 Years A Slave and Ratched, she's never anything short of phenomenal.

My favourite movie is The Apartment, so I often rewatch it, as it’s a classic. It’s a 1960 American romantic comedy produced and directed by Billy Wilder which stars Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, and Fred MacMurray. It was Wilder's next movie after Some Like It Hot and was a box office hit - it was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, and won five, including Best Picture. The Apartment is an insightful movie made by one of cinema's most talented directors.

MUSIC

I never get tired of listening to: The Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. I was never someone who was a fan of any particular band. I loved all kinds of music from pop to rock, ABBA to AC/DC, classical music to The Cure. When I was a teenager and this came out I thought now here’s an album I identify with. It has everything from gentle ballads to heavy metal with elements of electronic pop and alternate rock. I became an instant fan and still play this album and enjoy it as much as when I bought it. I even bought it on vinyl. My favourite song is Tonight, Tonight - maybe because of the orchestral arrangement of the track.

TV

I’m hooked on Line of Duty. It’s a drama series following the investigations of AC-12, a controversial police anti-corruption unit created by BBC television. It started in 2012. It was critically-acclaimed so I started watching it 2 years ago, catching up by watching the box sets. I’m not watching the sixth series which is on weekly and wish I could binge watch it but can’t! I’ve no patience.

THEATRE

I can’t wait for theatres to open. I love musical theatre. It’s what I started off doing before I went into opera. The last musical I saw was on TV. I watched Cats with James Corden, Jennifer Hudson and Judi Dench... to name but a few. Despite the wonderful cast, the musical/movie was terrible. I was so disappointed.

The next live show I’m booked to attend is Anything Goes at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, Dublin. It has the most memorable songs including I Get A Kick Out of You, You’re the Top, and Anything Goes, it’s everything you want a big Broadway musical to be and more. I can’t wait to see Megan Mullally in the role of Reno Sweeney. She is known for her iconic role as Karen Walker in the hit TV sitcom Will & Grace.

TECH

Duolingo is an app I’ve started using during the pandemic as I’m interested in languages. I speak French and a little German (I’ve just enrolled in the Goethe Institute to study the language more). Duolingo is designed to feel like a game and helps you learn new words and phrases through listening exercises, flashcards, and multiple-choice questions. It doesn’t and won’t make you fluent in any language but it has helped me with the basics and it’s a fun introduction into a new language you might want to learn. I’ve been working on Korean.

THE NEXT BIG THING...

We’ve started to see the roll out of vaccines and hopefully the next big thing will be to have an audience again at live theatre events. I’ve missed performing to a live audience and can’t wait until the time comes when I can be on stage again and also be in the audience for some of the wonderful shows scheduled to take place. Livestream is something that has become the norm and is at present ‘the big thing’. I see this continuing in the future.
