Why choose Music? 'We need new voices, new ideas, new art.’
For BIMM College Principal Alan Cullivan, there are two reasons why we should continually nurture new talent in the music industry.
"Firstly, we believe that creativity should be encouraged, supported, and developed, secondly, because of the ever-changing nature and fluidity of the music industry. If ever there was a time that we need new voices, new ideas, new art, it is now."
"Ireland is steeped in the arts but in the past, not all musicians and artists have had the encouragement or the opportunity to develop their creativity to its fullest potential," he says.
"If this pandemic has taught us one thing, it is to value our musicians (and artists and our writers, etc.) but we can go further. We can also support and encourage them and help to hone their craft and ensure that being a musician is rewarded so it is a realistic way of life."

Recreating an entire industry
Whilst Cullivan recognises that the live music sector has been impacted by the global pandemic, areas such as publishing and recording have remained untouched. And with the introduction and increased availability of vaccines, live music will eventually return, as society begins to normalise.
It’s during this time that there’s also an opportunity to help reshape and recreate the industry as a whole.
"If a prospective student was thinking of applying for BIMM’s main degree course, BA Commercial Modern Music, consideration should be given to the fact that this is a 4-year course, and therefore we’d like to think that there will be no restrictions applicable to the live music sector at that point (or well before that even)" he says.
"Students enrolling in September on the course will be getting involved in the industry at a point where the industry will yet again be reinventing itself so in effect, they will not be joining but rather creating the new music industry and I for one think that is an exciting opportunity."
