In the blink of an eye, the Christmas season is upon us and 2020 draws to a close. While this year has been full of highs and lows, Netflix are finishing it out with a bang with several stellar new releases that will keep the whole family entertained throughout this festive season

Here at Culture we're giving you a run-through of the ones not to be missed...

MANK - December 4th

While most people are familiar with the Hollywood hit Citizen Kane, you may not have known that the background of the film's screenwriter, Herman J. Mankiewicz, is enough to make a movie in itself. Coming to Netflix in early December, director David Fincher has done exactly that with Mank, examining 1930’s Hollywood through the eyes of Mankiewicz as he races to finish the cinematic masterpiece that went on to be released in 1941. As to be expected in 1930’s Hollywood, the film contains its fair share of glamour, sleeze, corruption and glory, balanced with a star-studded cast that are no stranger to the big screen of modern day Hollywood.

Coming to Netflix this December is a series exploring the journey of Selena Quintanilla, an American singer-songwriter, model, actress and fashion designer who became known as the 'Queen of Tejano' music, a popular style of music that fuses Mexican influences with that of Europe and the US. The series follows Selena from when she was a young girl growing up in Texas to her legacy as one of the most successful female Latin artists of all time. This series has been eagerly anticipated by fans of Selena's, with Jennifer Lopez being among those excited for its release. It’s certainly not one to miss if you’re any way interested in music and pop culture.

Detention - December 5th

If you're looking for something a bit spookier to watch this December, then look no further than Detention, a Taiwanese supernatural horror based on a video game of the same name. Detention takes place in Greenwood High School in the late 1990’s where transfer student, Yungxiang Liu steps into a forbidden area on campus, encountering the ghost of Ruixin Fang. It may not be quite the series to help you get in the festive spirit this December, but it sure will keep you on the edge of your seat!

Popular culture has always had a fascination with prom night as a coming-of-age moment of sorts, with the event featuring in every teen drama, series or movie to ever exist. While an Irish debs may often consist of a fancy dinner in a three-star hotel the next county over and your biology teacher performing a dj set to close the night, in America they do it a little differently. In Netflix's The Prom, a star-studded cast, including Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and James Cordon, to name but a few, offer support to a young girl who wants to take her girlfriend to prom in her small, conservative hometown. If you’re looking for glitz, glamour, drama and an unrealistic representation of prom night, then this is the movie for you!

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom - December 18th

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is set to be one of Netflix’s big hits this December, starring the late actor Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) in his final film appearance. It unfolds over the course of an afternoon in a recording studio in 1920’s Chicago as a group of musicians await the legendary Ma Rainey (played by Viola Davis). The film is based upon the two-time Pulitzer winning play by August Wilson and is directed by Denzel Washington, perfectly encapsulating the roaring 20s and the popularity of blues music at the time.

The Midnight Sky - December 23rd

While it is obvious that George Clooney is a man of many talents, it becomes startlingly apparent in his latest project The Midnight Sky, which he both directs and stars in. Clooney plays Augustine in this post-apocalyptic tale, a lonely scientist working in the Arctic who races to stop a team of astronauts from returning home to a mysterious global catastrophe. Think of The Martian but where the protagonist is on an Earth that is equally as inhospitable as Mars…

Bridgerton - December 25th

It seems that Netflix are anticipating Bridgerton to be a roaring success this year as they have saved it for release on Christmas Day. Once you are stuffed full of turkey and mince pies, why not sit down and relax in front of this romantic, scandalous and quick-witted series, detailing a high society scandal sheet written by the mysterious Lady Whistledown that causes havoc within Regency London's competitive marriage market. Bridgerton is the perfect middle ground between Pride and Prejudice and Gossip Girl and is sure to make a great watch this Christmas time.
