FILM
His House
British writer-director Remi Weekes revitalises the traditional horror genre with his debut film, starring Wunmi Mosaku and former Dr. Who Matt Smith. Carefully weaving the story of a young Sudanese couple seeking asylum in the UK with the horror trope of a haunted house, the film shines a light on the inhumanity faced by many asylum seekers, whether it be by living in migrant camps to facing casual racism on the streets. Weekes succeeds in making the world outside of the haunted house equally as terrifying as that within. His House is out this Friday on Netflix.

The Witches
Based upon Roald Dahl's classic children’s novel, The Witches are back with a vengeance. Set in late 1960’s America, a young orphaned boy moves in with his grandmother in Atlanta who, upon realising that there are witches roaming around, moves with her grandson to a place of safety - a fancy seaside hotel which happens to be the very location where the witches are convening. A very game Anne Hathaway plays the Grand High Witch, a Cruella de Vil-like character hellbent on turning all children into mice and exterminating them. Robert Zemeckis' film is now available to rent on demand.

ART
While lockdown has meant that we can't visit galleries, museums and other cultural institutions, a number of venues have been working hard to bring culture directly to our homes. One such innovation is The National Gallery of Ireland's exhibition Irish Horse, exploring the place of the horse in Irish life and art from the eighteenth century to the present day. It closes on November 4th so make sure to check it out via the NGI's website while you can.
