'For me, a hardware shop is a roomy emporium in an Irish town that sells everything from a needle to an anchor or thereabouts. And it’s epitomised for me by Betty Blain’s shop opposite the house where I grew up in Ardara, Co Donegal. Betty’s shop sold everything. Two long counters ran down the length of the building, the one grocery, the other drapery, and somewhere muddled up between the two you would find the hardware range of needles and anchors and everything in between...'
