Choice purveyors of contemporary ambient and electronic music A Winged Victory For The Sullen (AKA Dustin O'Halloran and Adam Wiltzie) are coming to the National Concert Hall on March 3rd, as part of the NCH's Perspectives series - more details here.
The duo have created iconic film scores and forward-thinking ambient groups, releasing a series of game-changing records for cult labels Erased Tapes and Kranky, most recently 2019's The Undivided Five.
We asked Adam Wiltzie for his choice cultural picks...
FILM
The Fountainhead - Epic post-WWII Gary Cooper drama based on Ayn Rand's polarising novel of the same name. After all this time, I understand that things has changed, and we have evolved, but this age-old tale about the power of selfishness really puts things into perspective about what is going on in the world currently.
MUSIC
Gaelic Psalm Singers – Salm, Vol. 1 (Gaelic Psalms from the Hebrides of Scotland). I cannot stop listening to this thing. It's the soundtrack of my life, and will be the pre-show music on the AWVFTS world tour…
BOOK
The Kid Stays in the Picture by Robert Evans. Evans was the producer behind classic 70's films like The Godfather, Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown & many others. He was a beautiful storyteller about the mystery of the old stars & the Hollywood system, always preserved in an enigmatic aura, and a great sense of humour. It’s hard to put down.
TV
Tabula Rasa - a Belgian-Flemish TV series about an amnesiac who is locked up in a secure psychiatric hospital. It is directed by Jonas Govaerts, who also directed the recent AWVFTS video for Aqualung Motherf**ker.
GIG
Chernobyl Live - we are probably a little biased here, as she is a good friend and occasional collaborator, but loved the performance of Hildur Guðnadóttir's score for the HBO drama Chernobyl (she also just won an Oscar for her music for Joker). This production is now on tour in select cites as a full-blown immersive concert experience. The live presentation of the music of Chernobyl is much more than "just" the brilliant score. The performance is a unique, layered experience. Highly recommended.
ART
Olafur Eliasson, Symbiotic Seeing (2020) at Kunsthaus Zürich.
PODCAST
Stephen Fry's The Seven Deadly Sins.
TECH
Little Belgium - a love letter to the little village i call home….
