Something for the Weekend – Farah Elle's Cultural Picks

Farah Elle is an acclaimed singer-songwriter with a unique sound influenced by an eclectic taste of genres, from hip-hop to R&B and ska, while featuring Arabian echoes from her Libyan background. She is currently based in Dublin, having moved to Ireland with her family when she was 2.

On February 29th, she's participating in Ireland's Edge: Awaking Creativity, the latest in a series of events from the Other Voices team bringing together a compelling range of voices to discuss Ireland; where we've been, where we are now, and where we want to go - find out more here.

We asked Farah for her Choice Cultural Picks...

FILM

The Breadwinner. It's an animation about a young Afghani girl whose father gets arrested by the Taliban, so she has to dress up as a boy in order to get food for her family, as it’s unacceptable for her to go out alone. It’s so beautiful and moving.

MUSIC

Both albums by Noname, Room 25 and Telefone.

BOOK

Women Who Run with the Wolves. It’s a long wordy book, teaching me things about myself. I seem to pick it up just when I need it, at strangely accurate points in my life.

PLAY

This Land. It’s a production put together last year by Candlelit Tales, exploring issues that affect migrants, fused with old Celtic mythology. I was delighted to be a part of it and would love to see it happen again.

TV

The Good Place, on Netflix, it’s awesome, especially if you like philosophy and feeling happy.

GIG

Upcoming: Other Voices Ballina, so excited! The last gig I attended was one I played at for Imbolg/St. Brigid’s Day for Herstory at the Sugar Club called Women & Warriors.

ART

Techniques of Invisibiity is an exhibition I attended in Berlin last December, exploring the role hyper-reality plays in our lives. I’m still reading the book by the artist, Micaela Terk, featuring interviews with all types of
people; how they keep their spirits fresh and how to get time to themselves in this age.

PODCAST

Senita Appiakorang’s (from the band Shookrah) Point of Intersection on Ireland’s role in culture and intersectionality.

THE NEXT BIG THING

Capoeira! I really want to start doing capoeira. It’s a Brazilian form of martial arts that blends music and dance with self-defense. How cool is that?

Farah Elle appears at Ireland's Edge Ballina, on February 29th 2020 - find out more here. She also plays live at Other Voices in Ballina that weekend - find out more here.
