RTE Radio 1 Folk Awards Ts & Cs

Participation/nominating denotes acceptance of all associated voting terms and conditions, Terms and Conditions for RTÉ.ie, RTÉ Privacy Statement and Cookie Policy.

The public nominations for RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards Best Emerging Artist will be deliberated upon by the Judging Panel to decide on the winner.

The Judging Panel reserve the right to nominate additional emerging artists not nominated by the public through the open call for consideration.

 

Nominations for Emerging Artist

You can nominate only by emailing folkawards@rte.ie

You may only nominate a maximum of one album for consideration. Artists can nominate themselves.

Nominations will be sent in the form of soundcloud, youtube or vimeo links or professionally recorded tracks.

Any nominations received by RTÉ outside the nomination period will not count. The closing date for RTÉ receipt of nominations is midnight on 28th July 2019.

RTÉ's decision on the eligibility of nominated folk songs shall be final.

Folk Awards Ts & Cs

The qualifying period for eligibility for the RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards will run from 27th July 2018 to the 26th July 2019.   

The judging process will take place between early August and early September and nominees will be announced in September 2019.  Winners will be announced in Vicar Street at the Folk Awards on 24th of October.

The winners of nine awards categories will be announced on the night.

These are:

1 Best Original Folk Track

2. Best Traditional Folk Track

3. Hall of Fame Award

4. Folk Singer of the Year

5. Best Emerging Folk Artist

6. Best Folk Album

7. Folk Instrumentalist of the Year

8. Best Folk Group

9. Lifetime Achievement Award

The Lifetime Achievement and Hall of Fame Awards will be decided by a committee comprised of the Folk Awards Steering Group with two additional external members.  The Best Folk Album of the Year award will be chosen by Radio 1 listeners through The John Creedon Show and Simply Folk with Ruth Smith.

Judging Panel

The remaining six awards will be decided by two rounds of panel voting.  The Judging Panel is comprised of 40 people and includes musicians, promoters, broadcasters, journalists, bloggers and venue owners.  They come from all over the country, span all ages and have a deep interest in folk music.

In the first round of panel voting they will be asked for four nominees for each of the six categories.  Those nominations will be counted by members of the Folk Awards Steering Committee and the top four nominees will be sent to each member of the Judging Panel for the second round of voting. The nominee with the highest number of votes will be the winner.  In the event of a tie the final decision will be made by the Folk Awards Judging Committee.

Judging panel members have been asked not to vote for family members or those with whom they have a close, current working relationship.  RTÉ reserves the right to resolve any such disputes should they arise.

Oversight of Judging Process

The entire judging process will be overseen and monitored by two members of RTÉ staff who are not eligible to vote in any of the categories.  They will ensure that the voting and counting is carried out in accordance with the terms and conditions of the event.

DESCRIPTIONS OF CATEGORIES

1. Best Original Folk Track: A new song or instrumental track which has been recorded during the eligibility period.

2. Best Traditional Folk Track: A recording of a traditional track (song or instrumental) from the Irish folk tradition which was recorded during the eligibility period.

3. Hall of Fame Award:  This award will be giving to a person no longer living that made a significant contribution to Irish folk Music during their lifetime.

4. Folk Singer of the Year:  An award for an Irish folk singer in recognition of a great recording or performance which took place during the eligibility period.

5. Best Emerging Folk Artist Award:  An award recognizing an emerging act (solo or group/vocal or instrumental) that made an impact on the Irish Folk scene within the eligibility period.

6. Best Folk Album:  The best folk album released during the awards year. (This excludes re-issues or compilations)

7. Folk Instrumentalist of the Year:  An award for a instrumental solo artist or a band member recognizing great musicianship either in a recording or a performance during the eligibility period.

8. Best Folk Group:  The Irish folk group which made the most impact during the eligibility period.

9. Lifetime Achievement Award:  This award will be given to a living artist who has made a significant contribution to Irish folk music over a period of many years.

The Judging Panel’s decision as regards the winners of the Folk Awards will be final and conclusive.

RTÉ reserves the right to change, cancel or suspend this project at any time.

What will RTÉ collect and how will RTÉ use it?

RTÉ is the data controller of your information that is collected. This means that RTÉ decides what your personal data is used for, and the ways in which it is processed.

For Nominations, the personal data that is collected is your name, email address, your nomination and your comment on why your chosen song/band/singer should be considered by the Judging Panel

For the purposes of processing valid nominations and votes from the RTÉ audience, it is necessary for RTÉ to process your personal data in the manner set out in these Terms and Conditions.


Retaining and sharing your information

Data relating to entrants will be retained by RTÉ for a reasonable period after the nomination process closes to assist RTÉ to operate the voting process in a consistent manner and to deal with any queries. Your personal data will be kept secure and will not be shared with any additional third parties outside of RTÉ.

Your rights
