The shortlist for the An Post Irish Book Awards 2018, announced today,  features a diverse mix of exceptional writing from new and established writers across sixteen categories, including Novel of the Year, Children’s, Cookery, Crime Fiction, Popular Fiction, Nonfiction, Sports, Short Story, Poetry, Teen and Young Adult. The shortlist includes the cream of cutting-edge Irish literature - Sally Rooney, Donal Ryan and Booker Prize winner Anna Burns - alongside best-selling popular writers - Emer McLysaght & Sarah Breen, Louise O'Neill, Liz Nugent and Paul Howard - and noteworthy newcomers ranging from essayist Emilie Pine to children's author  Niall 'Bressie' Breslin, together showcasing the rude health of the contemporary Irish book world.

The Eason Book Club Novel of the Year shortlist alone offers an wealth of unique voices, all at the height of their writing powers: Milkman by Anna Burns, From a Low and Quiet Sea by Donal Ryan, A Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne, Normal People by Sally Rooney, Travelling in a Strange Land by David Park and Darragh Martin's Future Popes of Ireland. 

Booker Prize winner Anna Burns - nominated for Novel Of The Year

Noteworthy nominees range from former president Mary Robinson, in the Non Fiction category, for her book Climate Justice, and Emma Hannigan, who passed away earlier this year, belatedly nominated for her moving bestseller Letters To My Daughter, to former US President Bill Clinton, shortlisted in The Ryan Tubridy Show Listeners’ Choice Award category for his thriller The President Is Missing, co-written with James Patterson. Listeners to The Ryan Tubridy Show can vote from a shortlist that also includes books from John Boyne, Patricia Gibney, Dervla McTiernan, Liz Nugent and A.J. Finn. 

For the first time, this year's categories include a welcome ‘Love Leabhar Gaeilge Irish Language Book Of The Year’ category, with books from Diarmuid Johnson, Michelle Nic Pháidín, Darach Ó Scolaí, Cathal Ó Searcaigh, Alan Titley and Celia De Fréine.

"We know that the Irish literary culture is regarded as one of the greatest in the world, and we’ve always wished for an awards project that rises to that challenge. We’re immensely proud of what we’ve achieved with the Irish Book Awards through a broad coalition of readers, publishers, writers, booksellers, librarians, and media.

The public are now being asked to cast their votes online for the best books of the year on the An Post Irish Book Awards website - voting runs until Friday, November 23rd.

In addition to the category winners, two additional special awards will also be announced in November, prior to the Irish Book Awards ceremony: The Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognises the contribution of distinguished Irish writers and poets, and the International Recognition Award, a special award made to international authors who have contributed substantially to the health and wealth of the Irish book-trade.
