Something For The Weekend: Brigid Mae Power's Cultural Picks

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Brigid Mae Power was born in London to a big Irish family, then moved to Galway when she was twelve years old.

In addition to the guitar, she plays accordion, baritone ukulele, piano and harmonium; her ethereal, emotive nu-folk sound has drawn acclaim both here and in the US, where she records for renowned indie label Tompkins Square.

Her latest album The Two Worlds is out now, and she plays The Cobblestone, Dublin, on November 22 - more details here.

Film

The new Quincy documentary on Netflix is so, so good. It’s about Quincy Jones, the 85 year old American producer who’s career in music has spanned six decades. He’s worked with everyone from Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin to Sarah Vaughn and Michael Jackson. It’s such an inspiring film, and will leave you in awe of him, his talent and also his positivity.

Music

Right now, I have just got back from a tour around mainland Europe with Damien Jurado. I still have his beautiful song Percy Faith ringing in my ears. The whole of his new album The Horizon just Laughed is great.

Book

Sally Rooney's Normal People… I read this in one day straight! I loved it so much. It was very relatable. After that, I also read her first one, Conversations with Strangers, and I loved that also.

Play

Sorry I don’t know any new plays or gone to any recently.. I used to like to read George Bernard Shaw’s plays...

TV

I know this is maybe a year or two ago but I absolutely loved the most recent series of Twin Peaks. There were lots of parts that were terrifying to me and that I had to hide behind my partner whilst watching.. But it was filled with such brilliant moments that made me proud of humans actually being able to make something so great. Everything about it was beautiful.

Gig

The gigs I go to are usually my own, or ones that I am supporting someone... I rarely get a chance to go to a gig without being involved in it somehow! But what springs to mind is seeing Andy Irvine in Galway a few months ago.. It was great and he was heartwarming as usual.

A upcoming gig I am excited for is to see Ora Cogan, a Canadian musician, in the Cobblestone in Dublin, on November 22nd. I am also playing at it which I’m looking forward to, but mostly I can’t wait to see her live.

Art

The work of Hilma Klint is something recently that’s caught my eye - I’m hoping to see this exhibition when I’m in NYC soon. Also, a young animator/illustrator called Cian Hogan from Galway but living in Canada is very talented.. he made an animation for one of my songs recently.. the animation is based on Irish landscapes, he did a great job

Tech

The Happy Cow app is great for finding good vegetarian food wherever you are travelling - on tour it's essential!

The Next Big Thing...

The Nintendo classic.. My son just got one, and it has 30 of the old games from the 80’s/90’s... It’s so great, and much easier on the senses than other kinds of 3D crazy in-your-face games.
