We spoke with English comedian Joel Dommett ahead of his appearance at the 2018 Vodafone Comedy Carnival. Watch the interview above.
Joel Dommett's life has been anything but boring. After being catfished and subsequently blackmailed over a Skype sex tape - which was eventually leaked right before his appearance on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in 2016 - the comedian turned his 'scandal' into a stand-up which was aired on Comedy Central.
Speaking on the experience, the comedian says he hopes he can spread the word and educate others on cybercrime.
"I'm trying to figure out the right charity to associate myself with, but all I'm doing at the moment is talking about it as much as possible and hopefully warning people if it looks like it's happening to them.
"It's mad, it's an epidemic. It's a real new type of crime that nobody really knows about. Hopefully, even though I'm laughing about what is a horrific thing, I can warn people if it's coming their way."
Despite his hardship, the funnyman is busier than ever with an upcoming Netflix comedy special, the second series of his show Jon & Nish vs The World, a trip to Australia to co-present I’m A Celeb's sister show Extra Camp and - most importantly- the Vodafone Comedy Carnival in Galway this October.
"Gigging in Galway is fantastic, it's the most beautiful place. It's unbelievably beautiful and [it has] a very comedy-savvy crowd, but also fun. That's always the best crowd when they know their stuff but are also a little bit rough around the edges," he explained.
"Irish crowds are pretty consistently good across the board," he continued. "My favourite crowds, I always say, are Irish crowds and Glasgow crowds. They occasionally throw out a heckle, but also know when to shut up."
The annual funny fest, which takes place from Tuesday, October 23rd to Monday, 29th of October, will be home to over 100 acts, and it seems that Joel is just as excited as any punter.
"Dylan Moran is there, which is massive. I think it's his only Irish show of the year and he's great, I saw him at Latitude this year back in Suffolk in the UK and it was so good. You know, it's so good to see someone who you've adored for so long still be so sharp."
He continued: "It's nice to be part of the Irish bunch for a bit. I can pretend I'm Irish. Patrick is my middle name so I can mix them up and be Patrick Joel Dommett for a couple of nights."
Somewhere during his busy schedule, the funnyman will also find time to plan a wedding to his girlfriend, Hannah Cooper.
Not a man to do things in half measures, Dommett wrote a proposal in the form of his book, It's Not Me, It's Them (Confessions of a True Romantic). After sharing various stories of his romantic pursuits over the years, the final page ended in a proposal to his girlfriend, which he read to her whilst dressed in a tuxedo.
Surprisingly, Dommett won't be pulling any stunts on the big day; instead, he's planning a low key affair with friends and family.
"We've both got jobs where we sort of perform to people, a lot so we're looking forward to having a really small wedding where we don't have to perform for the day - we can just relax and have family there. The thing I don't do is see my family enough."
