In The Picture: The Boatyard comes to West Cork

The art of Irish boat building embodies resilience, defiance and survival. The Boatyard: An Bádchlós is artist Anne Tilby’s shrine to the unknown fishermen and craftsmen who lived their lives by the sea.

Her latest work, exhibited at Bantry House, West Cork, until Sunday 29th July, is an appreciation of the obsolete culture of slow design, the courage of those who lived their lives at sea and who lived lives of measured craftsmanship. The exhibition at Bantry House features a soundscape with Irish voices, a junk waste plastic sail and a series of original prints.

About The Artist: Anne Tilby has had an interesting career, having been involved with production design for comedy series like Father Ted, Spitting Image and Sticky Moments. She has also designed for operas at Covent Garden, Royal Opera House and English National Opera and in 1998 received a BAFTA nomination for Alice Through The Looking Glass. For over forty years, Tilby’s design work for TV and stage has been intermittent with fine art exhibitions and collaborations, resulting in a cross fertilisation of mixed media work.

Boatyard: An Bádchlós runs at Bantry House, West Cork until July 30th, and will move to The Grainstore, Ballymaloe in October 2018.
