Something For The Weekend: Simon Delaney's Cultural Picks

Simon Delaney is one of Ireland's most-loved faces on stage and screen, from his early breakthrough in Bachelor's Walk to his role as the Dad in children's TV favourite Roy.

His extensive credits list includes everything from hosting Saturday AM on TV3 to box-office smash The Conjuring 2. Simon plays Jimmy Rabbitte, the Da in Roddy Doyle's acclaimed stage adaptation of his novel The Snapperwhich runs til Sept 15 at The Gate.

Film

Many many films to recommend, although nothing recent, I'd recommend a coupe of classics (classics in my eyes anyway!) Anything starring Jack Lemmon, my favourite actor of all time, but start with The Odd Couple and move onto Glengarry Glen Ross. The man's a genius.

Of the new releases, go and see Dublin Old School. Emmet Kirwan is a poet.

Music

I've been listening to a lot of the crooners over the past weeks, and have discovered Al Martino (who played Johnny Fonataine in The Godfather). Have a listen to his version of Blue Spanish Eyes. Beautiful.

Book

Re-read Ken Kesey's One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest recently. An amazing piece of work. Not a bad film either!

Play

So much on offer coming up with the Dublin Theatre Festival, and the Dublin Fringe. Try and get tickets to see Hamlet at The Gate, that'll be unmissable.

TV

Big fan of documentaries, and Netflix have so many good ones at the moment. Evil Genius and The Staircase are amazing.

On TV, I am glued to Billions on Sky Atlantic. Paul Giamatti and Damien Lewis. Brilliant television.
