Something For The Weekend: Mango & Mathman's Cultural Picks

Following show-stealing festival turns at Body&Soul and Longitude, Dublin hip-hop duo Mango & Mathman are having all the craic this summer.

We asked them for some choice cultural selections...

FILM

Dublin Old School. We don’t have enough column space to fully explain how important this film is as a timestamp, a rude awakening and a love letter to our city. It’s hilarious, heartbreaking, honest and we’re in it too, so it’s lethal.

MUSIC

Ah where do we start with this one!? Right now, we gotta look no further than home to hear some amazing music. Anything coming out of our good friends Diffusion Lab studio is top drawer. Soulé, Jafaris, DAY_S, Flynn etc. all release under Diffusion Lab and the music is whopper. Also our friends Kojaque & Softboy records, Sequence, Loah, Erica Cody and Paul Alwright are all releasing great music. Ireland is an exciting hotbed of music right now, and we’re really proud to be part of that.

BOOK

Not a book, but a magazine – people should check out District Magazine's guide to Dublin city. It’s a monthly magazine available for free around the city. It’s a great collection of articles, photos, interviews and reviews in all areas of alternative and counter culture happening in Ireland. The guys are really passionate about what they do and it’s a great insight into a lot of culturally important stuff that's happening in Ireland. For those unable to grab a physical copy in Dublin, the magazine will be available to read online soon enough.Keep the eyes peeled.

PLAY

Anything Lee Coffey from Bitter Like A Lemon writes people should see.

TV

We’re not really ones for TV to be honest.

GIG

Upcoming gig is our next festival stop at Indiependence in Mitchelstown, Cork. We’re really excited to play this as South West crowds are always well up for it. We play the Urban Village on Sunday 5th August. The last gig we attended was Longitude. We were there for a couple of days, so after our own set we were able to check out Giggs, Sampha, Anderson Paak and SZA who all shut the place down. An amazing weekend of music and a real honor for us to play it.

ART

We’ve both always had a love for street art and grafitti and in the last few years the level and profile of murals in the city has been incredible. People like Aches who does stuff with Subset at the moment is doing some incredible stuff. He also works with Maser now and then; who’s a mate of ours, and what they’ve helped bring back is serious giant pieces that make people stop in the street - take it out of the galleries and give art back to the people. There’s so much great art happening in Ireland right now and these are justafew that we love -Dan Leo, Lifestyles Crew, All Out design, El Viz, Novice, Subset, Solus, 6th Realm, Steve McCarthy… LOADS.

RADIO/PODCAT

We love SnooDs AM podcast and the Glucose & Gullies mix series from Cóilí Collins. The guardian long reads are good if you want to get immersed into a story that you never thought you’d be interested in but still dont want want that NPR vocal fry melting your head.
