Watch the world premiere of two new short films by award-winning filmmaker Oonagh Kearney, commissioned by Crash Ensemble for their 2017 Bedroom Community album Ghosts.
The ensemble commissioned three Irish filmmakers, Oonagh Kearney, Jack Phelan and Laura Sheeran, to create works in response to the Ghosts album. Kearney's videos for the title track and Past Tundra, composed by Valgeir Sigurðsson and performed by Crash Ensemble, were filmed in Schull, West Cork.
"Listening to both pieces," says Oonagh Kearney, "my imagination was brought to the sea: to the struggle between a young sailor and the sea in Ghosts, and to the struggle between a group of beached sailors and the land in Past Tundra. In this way, the films are linked thematically and geographically, but also stand alone as two individual works. Picking up on the poignant and political theme of contemporary migration, there is no canvas more dramatic than the sea. For me, it responds to the structural qualities in Valgeir's music: tension, release, mystery, drama, fear and hope."
Ghosts: the visual album will receive its premiere screening at the IFI, Dublin on Saturday April 14th, as part of this year's Musictown festival - more details here.
