The Defiant Ones is a new 4-part Netflix documentary exploring the culture clash of a relationship that defined the sound of a generation and beyond.
Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine proved the unlikely partnership that shaped the music scene and the new doc features interviews with pretty much anyone who’s anyone within that world. Alan Corr took a look at the first two episodes and reported back to Sean Rocks on Arena.
"It’s a veritable ‘who’s who’ of rock n roll and rap music and pop music since the early 70’s. In the very first episode alone we get new interviews with Bono, we get interviews with Ice Cube, Patti Smith, Bruce Springsteen and Snoop Dogg, who is puffing away as always, and Eminem - and we also have interviews with Jimmy’s sister and Dre’s mother, who is very important to this story."
Alan describes the series as "very cleverly constructed" in that, at first, it’s difficult to conceive of these two very different characters even meeting, let alone forming one of the strongest partnerships in musical history.
"It takes its name from The Defiant Ones, which was a Stanley Kramer movie from 1958 which starred Tony Curtis and Sydney Poitier as two escaped prisoners, one is black and one is white and they’re forced to work together, they’re manacled together… Iovine and Dr Dre were very, very different people. They come from the west coast, that’s Dr Dre, and the east coast, that’s Iovine, they were born into completely different backgrounds. Iovine comes from a very closely knit Jewish Italian family. Dre was born in Compton which of course was the crime capital of California if not America… It’s very hard to see how these guys are going to eventually meet and where their careers would intertwine."
The documentary chronicles their careers independently and together and of course, that incredibly lucrative Beats by Dre deal with Apple that nearly caused a riot in the hip-hop world.
