Singer Cathy Davey is set to take to the stage tonight in Whelan’s at a fundraiser for her animal charity, My Lovely Horse Rescue. She joined Ray on The Ray D’Arcy Show to sing a couple of songs and tell him about the gig, which features appearances from Róisín O and CC Brez.

Despite the name, the charity does not just focus on horses, Cathy told Ray. Although there are 200 of them onsite at the shelter she operates. There, you will also find 11 pigs that are "really like dogs" and other assorted farm animals. Cathy thinks one of the reasons they receive so many animals to care for is that potential pet-owners don’t always think things through.

"We want everything. We want it now. And a lot of people will obtain an animal and then realise how much work it is. But that animal’s already been brought into the world and it needs to be looked after. So, that’s where we come in."

Cathy explained that the circumstances the animals are abandoned in can often contribute to the cost of helping them.

"A lot of the times they could be tied up, sort of hidden in some bushes where the rope will be embedded in their legs and you’ll have to get vets out to treat that. Then rehabilitate them and then we try and train them if they’re trainable and rehome them."

Ray wanted to know what the most unusual animal she has on the farm is.

"We were asked to take in a camel recently. Which we really, really want! But we’re not set up for a camel so we’re trying to find a suitable place for it."
