Josepha Madigan, Fine Gael TD for Dublin Rathdown, has been named the new Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar in today's cabinet reshuffle.

Ms Madigan is a first-time TD, elected at the 2016 General Election. The Dáil officially voted in her new ministerial role with 52 votes for her, 39 against and 38 abstaining.

A family law solicitor by trade, Josepha Madigan is also an author, having self-published a novel, Negligent Behaviour, set amidst the Dublin legal world, back in 2011.

She replaces Heather Humphreys, the newly appointed Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Ms Humphreys held the Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht portfolio since June. She previously served as Minister for Arts, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht Affairs from July 2014 to May 2016; and Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs from May 2016 to June 2017.

Earlier this month, The Taoiseach restated his commitment to double total funding for the arts in Ireland over a period of seven years. 

The new appointees will make their way to Áras an Uachtaráin to collect their seals of office.
