Something For The Weekend: Ane Brun's Cultural Picks

Leave Me Breathless is Norwegian born, Stockholm based Ane Brun's seventh studio release, and her most personal, given that it consists of fourteen cover versions of her favourite love songs.

The album includes her own unique take on classics by Joni Mitchell, Nick Cave, Foreigner, Bob Dylan, Sade, Mariah Carey and more - here's her version of Radiohead's How To Disappear Completely:

We asked Ane for her own choice cultural picks:

Film

I saw this black-and-white indie movie on Netflix the other day called Blue Jay and I loved it! A story about two people who used to be high school sweethearts, and they accidentally bump in to each other in their home town. It's a believable drama with great acting.

Music

The last gig I attended was DJ Shadow in Stockholm. I'm an old fan, ever since the 90's, when I went out dancing a lot when club music was at its peak back then. And his sound is still amazing. I love his old productions, but I also love the new stuff and he inspires me. He also had fantastic visuals on stage. And I recommend watching his video with Run The Jewels, Don't Speak

Book

by Phil Parker. A book about how you by choosing carefully your words and vocabulary can change the way you feel in life. It's related to neuro linguistic programming,l theories. And how we possibly unconsciously influence our well being through the choices we make in our everyday language.

Gig

The next gig I'm excited about is Nils Frahm. This German keyboardist and composer makes the most beautiful, often sparse compositions and productions. There's an analogue honesty about his playing and melodies, and the presence is like that of a phenomenal singer, sometimes like Chet Baker, Cat Power, or Nat King Cole in the way it makes me and my ears feel.

Podcast

Invisibilia - I really enjoy this podcast by NPR. They dig into existential topics and the episodes are named Emotions, Fear, Reality, Future Self and more... the first one I heard was Fearless and got blown away by the story about a person who is incapable of feeling fear, but is still emotional and empathetic.

Tech

Radiooooo is an app where you can pick a country, a decade, choose 'slow', 'fast' or 'weird' - and you'll be presented to all kinds of obscure music from around the world!
