It's the weekend after Paddy’s Day, the clocks are going forward and there's something in the air - dare we say that summer feeling? Here’s a trio of choice artistic happenings for your delectation...
DUBLIN: YOUNG III - A New Generation, So Fine Art, Annes St. South
It's your last chance to catch a vivid snapshot of a new generation of Irish artistic talents (21 in total) working across fine art, photography, ceramics and glass sculpture, ones-to-watch like Neil Dunne, Sam Le Bas, Jordan McQuaid and Eileen O’Sullivan. An interesting opportunity to see what’s new, and what's next.
WEXFORD: Levy Sekgapane (Tenor) and Albie van Schalkwyk (Piano), National Opera House
Remarkable young South African tenor Levy Sekgapane has been winning several prizes - among them the Montserrat Caballé International Singing Competition - and packing venues across the globe. Future engagements include Conte di Libenskof in Il Viaggio A Reims at Copenhagen Opera, Rome Opera and at Liceu Barcelona - this Friday, he’s coming to the National Opera House. This promises to be exceptional.
BELFAST: The Importance of Being Earnest, The MAC
One of Oscar Wilde’s most famous works is revisited at the MAC Belfast by Bruiser Theatre Company, as performed by an all-male ensemble (for intriguing reasons articulated above). This classic comedy makes fun of Wilde’s Victorian society and all the silly conventions around marriage, courtship and identity - make no mistake, this is still highly relevant today. Better still - it's hilarious.
