Former Arts Editor of the Irish Times, Shane Hegarty, is now a hugely popular children’s author best known for his Darkmouth series, and the good news is that the first book in the series is being made in to an animated movie…. in Los Angeles, no less!
The movie is due for release in January 2019 and earlier this week Hegarty told Ray D’Arcy about how the deal was made before publication of the book. He just had to wait for the ‘when and wherefores’.
And, while Shane wanted an Irish name as his main character, he knew he couldn’t use any of his children’s names. With Finn being the chosen name, he explained why his kids’ names just wouldn’t work.
‘I’ve got an Oisín, Caoimhe, Aisling and Laoise and if you travel outside of Ireland with those names, border stops are always a bit of fun’.
The Darkmouth series of books is much loved among children, and if you haven’t heard their author, Shane Hegarty, on-air before, he makes for a terrific interviewee. You can listen back by clicking above.
