Your Friday Playlist: From Thundercat & Kendrick to Stormzy & Ed

Thundercat - possibly Drunk.
Thundercat - possibly Drunk.

This week, we celebrate the awesome mix that the juxtaposition of several different music styles can create... Music is sometimes a beautiful confluence between different seas. Dive in.

Ibeyi – Lost In My Mind

The prodigious French-Cuban twin sisters - best known as scene-stealers in Beyonce’s Lemonade video - have just dropped their first official studio track since their debut album Ibeyi in 2015, and and they slay it again! Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi’s music is heavily influenced by their Cuban roots, but dig a little deeper and you'll feel soul, jazz and R’N’B in the mix. This track feels like an evolution from their debut, fusing traditional South American instruments such as cajón and batá with a splash of piano, and we're really feeling those electro beats, an original mixture. The poetry of the song is mixed with a spectral melody:

Midnight sunshine / It's your smile / I'm going crazy

The sisters’ voices here remind you of their stunning track River, sung in Yoruba (the language from West Africa they inherited from their father), and its haunting atmosphere. You’ll feel haunted...

Bad Sea – Tell Me (What I Mean)

Dublin duo (and self-professed 'Banger Merchants') Ciara Thompson and Alan Farrell met on Tinder and then formed a band - true story! - now they've cooked up this fresh pop anthem, all twangy guitar riffs and soaring chorus. Ciara’s positively lascivious voice gives it the serious hard sell - and we're buying.

Ed Sheeran – Shape Of You (Stormzy remix)

Grime hero Michael Omari (alias Stormzy) killed it on stage at the BRIT Awards last week, joining Ed Sheeran on stage and adding some winning hip-hop vibes to Ed's hit Shape of You. We do love Stormzy’s flow, and his debut album Gang Signs and Prayer is an early highlight of 2017 - check out Big For Your Boots for starters. To be continued....

Thundercat ft. Kendrick Lamar – Walk On By

We already raved about Thundercat’s new album Drunk, but couldn’t resist to add one more tune - the jazzy and funky old school vibes are in full effect, and Kendrick’s participation is sheer perfection - the duo previously collaborated to winning results on Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly. Each song on Drunk offers a pure music moment, straight up - we're couldn't be more excited about Thundercat's Dublin date later this month.

I Have A Tribe – After We Meet

Irish artist Patrick O’Laoghaire is the mystery man behind I Have A Tribe - this new single is taken from his debut album Beneath A Yellow Moon. Patrick’s whispery croon gives us some serious psychedelic vibes, and we do love that. We also love his DIY make-and-do video - you can't go wrong with arts and crafts. Watch this space: I Have A Tribe play Whelans in Dublin tonight, Friday, March 3rd. See you there.
