Your Thursday Playlist: Jamiroquai, Goldfrapp, Anohni & more

This week’s playlist: Think electro, with a hint of Irish indie pop. Groove is the word.

Jamiroquai – Automaton

Back after seven years with the first track from their new album (due March 31st), the post-apocalyptic video features Jay Kay negotiating urban ruins with his trademark hat on - albeit a new hi-tech version. The fearless leader said this about his tune: ““The inspiration for Automaton is in recognition of the rise of artificial intelligence and technology in our world today and how we as humans are beginning to forget the more pleasant, simple and eloquent things in life and in our environment including our relationship with one another as human beings.” While adding Daft Punk-like touches, Jamiroquai bring their characteristic funk groove in full effect, and even add a rap element to the mix. Guess what? It works!

Goldfrapp – Anymore

The electronic duo of choice (Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory) make another splash; with Goldfrapp’s seductive tones in full effect, Anymore really grooves. Yes, this tune has a serious Blondie influence - never a bad thing - but also reminds us of a French banger by Hollysiz entitled Come Back To Me (have a listen here). Anymore is all about those electro-infused disco beats - listen urgently if you want to move your body. Their new album Silver Eye will also be out on March 31st.

Montauk Hotel – Black Dress

This new four-pece Irish all-girl outfit arrive fully-formed, with this tasty slice of jangly '80’s indie pop worship -  the summery/shimmery beat is filled with positive vibes and carefreeness, and that's more than okay with us. Montauk Hotel play The Sound House in Dublin tonight, and in Whelan’s on March 10th, to celebrate their debut EP release. Be there from the outset.

Anohni – Paradise

Warning: this song is really addictive. Paradise is both feminist and engaged - the stated aim is to awaken women’s consciousness. It's all about the US political situation and our patriarcal society, with hip-hop, electro and soul influences swirling about Anohni's incandescent vocals. And then there are the lyrics: 'My mother's love/Her gentle touch/My father's hand/Rests on my throat.' Her new EP is released March 17th. Seriously, check this out…

Ásgeir – Unbound

The 24-year-old Icelandic phenomenon and his band return after four years and the success of their previous album In The Silence. Unbound is all about Ásgeir's vocals, effortlessly reaching high notes that would give Justin Timberlake a run for his money. The electric/organic balance is perfectly executed, and everybody’s already talking about a Bon Iver influence - they're not wrong. About the lyrics, penned by his brother Steini, Ásgeir said: “[They are] about living in the now and not getting stuck on the past and what we can't change." The future looks bright, having already won Iceland’s heart via the largest selling album there in 2012. New album Afterglow will be released May 5.
