The new season of The Tommy Tiernan Show premiered last Thursday to rave reviews across the board from media and viewers alike, with #thetommytiernanshow blowing up Twitter & Facebook, and over 320,000 viewers tuning in. The show returns to RTÉ screens tonight, Thursday Jan 12th, at 10.15pm.
The surprise guests on the night were Aslan’s Christy Dignam, Vogue Williams and comic Russell Howard, with Tommy’s spontaneous line of questioning - lest we forget, he doesn't know who he'll be interviewing until they walk on stage - going down a storm. The interview with Dignam, in particular, which cetainly didn't shy away from the singer's ongoing struggles with cancer, was a particular highlight.
A mercurial talent long in search of a TV vehicle suitable of his formidable talents, The Tommy Tiernan Show offers this loose cannon the opportunity to play to his strengths as both stand-up and provocateur. What's more, he isn't afraid to embrace the awkward moment and promptly spin it into comedy gold - case in point, his encounter with Vogue Williams.
“I am overwhelmed by the response to the first show," says Tiernan, "and keen to see if people are up for the adventure of the rest of the series. Every episode is a gamble, but it’s always been my nature to take chances. I hoped the format would allow the unpredictable and the authentic to occur. The rest of the episodes are in the same vein and I hope ye all continue to enjoy them”
Who can we expect this week? The only way to find out is by tuning in. in the meantime, catch up with the first episode of The Tommy Tiernan Show here.
