John Montague is one of our major, internationally renowned Irish poets. He was born in Brooklyn in 1929 and educated in Northern Ireland, Dublin and the US. In 1998 he became the first Ireland Professor of Poetry.
He has published numerous collections, writing about his personal history and Ireland’s political history, about place and exile, about love and loss. ‘The Trout’ is from his ‘Collected Poems’, published by The Gallery Press in 1995.
He joined Rick O’Shea on the Poetry Programme in October 2015 to read just a tiny selection of poems from a life’s work. You can listen back to the interview here, and watch John Montague's interview with John Kelly for The Works Presents here.
