National Heritage Week: History on your doorstep

Did you know you could whale watch off Ireland’s coast or follow the path of the urban otter? Running from the 20th to the 28th of August, Heritage Week plays host to a plethora of events in every corner of the country from Killeshandra to Killkenny, Dunfanaghy to Dublin. With the centenary in mind, this year's theme is one hundred years of heritage.

An archaeological excavation at Swords Castle; discovering the medicinal and culinary usage of herbs at An Paircín Clinic open day in Tralee; exploring 19th century architecture in Athenry - the list goes on and on. One of the very best aspects of Heritage Week is that the majority of events are absolutely free.

As school year looms ever-closer, this is an excellent option to entertain the family prior to the autumnal routine. Whether exposed to something new, investigating something behind what are normally closed doors or indulging a familiar passion, Heritage Week reveals the hidden treasures on your doorstep.

Defined by the Heritage Council of Ireland as a relationship between people and place, the week expands our understanding of “Heritage” as being so much more than a recollection of the past. Supporting communities today, there are workshops educating children about our natural landscape through art, trails through biodiverse landscapes, and a broad range of activities which contribute to future conservation by raising awareness of our environment at local levels.

A collaboration between community groups, official societies, government bodies and over 16,000 volunteers there are over 1800 events to choose from and nearly 400,000 expected to attend.

“Heritage Week captures the huge enthusiasm local communities have for our heritage, and their appreciation of how it supports our sense of well-being, our tourism and our environment," says Heather Humphreys Minister of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.
