Everything Flows
Everything Flows
— and when we finally fell
quiet it would be your tribe
what emerged soft barks
hesitant blinking in light
slow stepping over bones
lain still in peatbog black
earth breathe easy know
we wouldn’t leave you be
death is little but a long
sleep beneath our feet
now&again you surface
and again you surface
last of your kind still
life will remind us how
we were once this ache
this generous together
'This poem draws inspiration from Barrie Cooke's painting Megaceros Hibernicus (1983). I've been mesmerised by this painting since I encountered it in early April and have spent much time contemplating its ethereal, timeless, evocative qualities. I knew it would emerge in my own work in some form, drawing — as it does — on a deep elemental solace embodying the cyclical yet eternal nature of existence. Philosopher Heraclitus' famous words “everything flows” adorned the wall of Cooke’s studio in Thomastown and much of his art was inspired by this philosophical meditation on all things flowing gently in the stream of creation, then passing away.'
