The definition of extraordinary is; very unusual or remarkable. And in many ways the bond between a child and their mother embodies both of these adjectives. The journey of becoming a mother is extraordinary. The act of being a mother is extraordinary. Our relationships with our mothers are extraordinary.
The amount of societal pressure put on mothers is also extraordinary. We have grown up idealising mothers to be caring and giving but also strong and protective. They must tend to their children, they must work, they must housekeep. In many ways Mothers are set up to fail. In my painting I wanted to show the pain of being a mother and the pressure and intensity it entails, which then leaks into the life of a child.
As children our most important relationship in our lives is the one we share with our mothers and the most important relationships in our lives are the ones that cause us the most heartbreak. I wanted to depict all aspects of a mother through this painting, the good, the bad and the heartbreak.
A quote from the book ‘What My Mother and I Don’t Talk About.’ perfectly depicts the emotional atmosphere I tried to create in my painting; “Our mothers are our first homes, and that’s why we’re always trying to return to them. To know what it was like to have one place where we belonged. Where we fit.”
