Artists Statement
Hello, I’m Emma, I’m 12 years old and I live in Aharney, Tullamore, County Offaly.
In my mind, when I hear the word ‘extraordinary’ the first thing I think of is Matilda by Roald Dahl. If you asked the girls in my class, you would hear a lot about ponies and horses, but that stuff never really pricked my attention.
I’ve always loved reading, (well, from juniors upwards, I couldn’t read before then) and Matilda has always been one of my favourite books. Roald Dahl was an amazing author, and his books are still celebrated for a reason, but nowadays you get less and less readers. So my brother and I decided to use book characters as our inspiration for the artwork.
I’ve depicted her in a library because I feel like she would be the happiest surrounded by books. As she is a small child, she would need some extra height to reach some of the books so therefore she is standing on a stack of books.
For the picture itself I drew it with a pencil (DUH), used a black outliner pen for the outline and Sharpies for the colour because they are bright and bold. I have to endure many fumes from the things!
