Comedian Joan Rivers remains in a critical condition after doctors placed her in a medically induced coma following complications during an operation on her vocal chords.

The 81-year-old is reportedly on life-support after she went into cardiac arrest earlier this week during an operation to repair her vocal chords.

She was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, Los Angeles, in a critical condition on Thursday morning at 9.40am after she stopped breathing during a routine medical procedure at a nearby clinic.

TMZ.com reports they have been told by sources close to Rivers that the Fashion Police star is on life-support, but the family are still hoping she will bounce back and recover her full health.

Rivers' daughter Melissa, has released a statement thanking everyone for their messages of support. She said: "My mother would be so touched by the tributes and prayers that we have received from around the world.

"Her condition remains serious but she is receiving the best treatment and care possible. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts as we pray for her recovery."

Friends of the star, including her E! colleagues, Kelly Osbourne and Giuliana Rancic, have been posting their messages of support on Twitter.
