First it was the new female Thor and now Marvel Comics has unveiled a black Captain America in the latest shake-up of its superhero characters.

Marvel will replace lantern-jawed, all-American hero Steve Rogers with Sam Wilson, better known as the Falcon in the Marvel universe.

The announcement was made on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report last night (July 16). Fans had long expected the shift from Rogers to his old ally Wilson, who debuted in 1969 and was the first African-American superhero in mainstream comics.

Marvel also says it has plans for other Avengers. Iron Man, Tony Stark, is getting a new outfit and moving to San Francisco with the new name 'Superior Iron Man'.

And according to Marvel's editor-in-chief, Axel Alonso, "He will be 'a character that's hard to root for."
